Residents in the Anthem neighborhood of Broomfield and the nearby Town of Erie are being urged to take extra precautions with their pets following a series of recent wildlife attacks. According to local law enforcement, three separate incidents involving coyotes killing dogs have been reported in the Anthem area. In a separate but related event, a mountain lion snatched a small dog in Erie, further heightening concerns about the presence of predatory wildlife in suburban communities.
The Broomfield Police Department issued a public safety warning, alerting residents to the growing risk posed by wild animals in residential areas. Officials emphasized that coyotes are capable of scaling fences as high as six feet, making it easier for them to access backyards and snatch unattended pets. “Residents should supervise pets closely due to wildlife presence,” the department advised, noting that animals left alone—even in fenced yards—remain vulnerable.
In response to the attacks, authorities are urging pet owners to keep their animals within five feet at all times when outdoors. The recommendation is part of a broader effort to reduce the risk of further encounters between household pets and native predators.
The recent incidents underscore a persistent challenge in suburban areas adjacent to natural open spaces: the overlap between human development and wildlife habitats. As neighborhoods such as Anthem continue to expand into historically wild terrain, encounters with coyotes, mountain lions, and other animals have become more frequent.
The Town of Erie Police Department has also acknowledged the incident involving the mountain lion and is continuing to monitor wildlife activity in the area. Residents in both communities are encouraged to report any sightings or encounters to their local police departments.
For now, the attacks serve as a sobering reminder that even well-maintained suburban neighborhoods are not immune to the dangers posed by Colorado’s wildlife. Authorities stress that vigilance and responsible pet supervision are key to preventing further tragedies.
