The Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation marked a significant milestone on November 1, celebrating its 45th anniversary with a gala event at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. The evening brought together supporters, alumni, and community leaders to honor the enduring legacy of Rosa Parks and the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to empowering Michigan students through education.

Since its inception in 1980, the Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $3 million in scholarships, supporting more than 1,600 high school seniors across the state. The scholarships recognize academic achievement, community service, and alignment with the values of courage and civil rights exemplified by Rosa Parks.

This year’s anniversary celebration featured a keynote address by acclaimed actor and Detroit native Courtney B. Vance, adding star power and heartfelt reflection to the evening. Also taking the stage was Jamal Simmons, a Foundation alumnus, who shared his personal journey and the impact the scholarship had on his life and career.

Jim Rosenfeld, the Foundation’s president, spoke about the importance of the scholarships in both honoring Rosa Parks’ legacy and encouraging the next generation of leaders. He emphasized that the awards are more than just financial support—they are a celebration of young people who embody Parks’ commitment to justice and education.

Board member Erica Thedford echoed this sentiment, highlighting the Foundation’s belief that education is both a right and a responsibility. She underscored the organization’s mission to continue advancing the values that Rosa Parks stood for by investing in the potential of Michigan’s youth.
