A Colorado Springs discount grocery store is providing deeply reduced food prices to assist local residents impacted by the government shutdown and potential disruptions to SNAP funding.
My Bargain Mart is selling items such as whole chickens for one dollar per pound and beef for between two and four dollars per pound. Other available deals include bread for 99 cents and condiments starting at 50 cents. A special promotion offers Sloppy Joe mix and buns for $2.50, a package the store notes can produce between eight and twelve sandwiches.
The store’s owner, Jim Krug, indicated his motivation is to help ensure community members have enough to eat.
The low-cost inventory was made possible after the business acquired the remaining stock from a Safeway store that was closing. In addition to the current specials, My Bargain Mart provides a standing 10% discount to seniors and military personnel. The establishment also contributes to area food banks.
