**Colorado Springs Woman Sparks Weekly Tradition of Gratitude for Sanitation Workers**
Every Friday morning in northeast Colorado Springs, a quiet act of kindness unfolds on the curbside — one that has grown into a neighborhood tradition over the past year. It all began when local resident Ariahna Whiteside decided to start offering home-cooked meals to her sanitation workers as a gesture of appreciation.
Whiteside, a mother and avid cook, said she was motivated not only to thank the workers who help keep her community clean, but also to set an example for her children about the importance of gratitude and giving back — even during tight financial times.
“I love to cook, and this felt like a meaningful way to show appreciation,” Whiteside explained. “Even when money’s tight, we find ways to give.”
The simple act of handing out food to the sanitation crew from Apex Waste Solutions quickly resonated beyond her household. Neighbors began to take notice and soon joined in, turning Whiteside’s individual gesture into a collective effort. Now, each Friday, sanitation workers on their regular route through the neighborhood are greeted with snacks, drinks, and warm meals from a growing number of appreciative residents.
Keoni Kaneshiro, one of the sanitation drivers who regularly stops in the area, expressed gratitude for the unexpected recognition. “It’s not often that people stop to say thank you,” he said. “To be met with kindness like this every week really means a lot.”
Whiteside’s efforts have not only made a lasting impression on the workers but have also helped foster a stronger sense of community. What began as a modest attempt to teach her children about kindness has blossomed into a neighborhood ritual that celebrates the often-overlooked work of sanitation crews.
Now a weekly tradition, the Friday food deliveries continue to build community bonds and demonstrate that small gestures can have a wide-reaching impact. As the neighborhood heads into the second year of this heartfelt custom, the spirit of appreciation shows no signs of slowing.
