**COLORADO SPRINGS** – An 80-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Sunday for the first-degree murder of his wife in their northern Colorado Springs home.

Stephen Chan received the mandatory sentence on September 1, 2024, after being found guilty in the shooting death of Jian Chan. The sentencing concludes a case that began with the discovery of Jian Chan’s body at a residence on Walsen Road. An investigation determined she died from gunshot wounds to her chest.

According to information from the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Stephen Chan later confessed to the killing.

During the legal proceedings, the defense, led by public defender Jonathon Stafford, attempted to secure a plea deal for a lesser charge of manslaughter. However, the deal was rejected by the prosecution, which proceeded with the first-degree murder charge.

Following the guilty verdict, the court imposed the sentence of life in prison, ensuring Stephen Chan will spend the remainder of his life incarcerated. The case is now considered closed.
